Summary

Mary E. Flahive and Marie A. Vitulli analyzed employment data of new Ph.D. mathematicians from 1991-1995 and 1996-2008, collected by the American Mathematical Society (AMS). They found no substantial gender difference in employment rates, with jobless rates of 6.0% for women and 5.2% for men in 1996-2008. However, there were gender differences in the type of employment, with men having higher percentages of employment in Group Ia (top mathematics departments) and non-academic employers, while women had higher percentages of employment in four-year colleges. The study also found that women from Group Va (applied mathematics/applied science) programs had less gender difference in employment rates compared to those from Groups I-III. Overall, the data suggested that women may have less opportunity to continue mathematical research and may experience salary disparities due to the type of positions they hold.
