The SEVIRI Dust RGB is used for detecting dust in the atmosphere, identifying high-level cirrus clouds and low-level moisture boundaries, and distinguishing water clouds from ice clouds. It can also detect volcanic ash and SO2 plumes. The Dust RGB is available day and night, and its benefits include high temporal resolution, good color contrast, and the ability to monitor dust cloud displacement. However, it has limitations, such as not being able to determine the height or concentration of dust clouds, and difficulty in detecting thin or low-level dust clouds over the sea. The RGB uses three window channels, with the red signal helping to distinguish dust from ice and water clouds, the green signal distinguishing dust clouds from cloud-free desert surfaces, and the blue signal depending on the thickness and temperature of the dust cloud. The color interpretation of the Dust RGB includes dust or ash clouds appearing pink to violet, cirrus clouds appearing black or dark blue, and thick ice clouds appearing white.
