Monroe Philanthropists, a youth-led philanthropy program, was piloted from October 13, 2021, to February 1, 2022, with 12 eighth-grade students from Monroe Middle School. The program, developed in partnership with the Ed Darby Foundation, aimed to develop students' leadership and social-emotional skills while executing a philanthropic process with $10,000. The students identified six focus areas: basic needs, menstrual products, classroom supplies, youth voice, school food, and mental health. They made direct monetary contributions, advocated for change, and combined these approaches to address the identified areas. The program's results showed that 100% of students enjoyed the experience, felt challenged, and would recommend it to friends. They also reported increased confidence, recognition of their voice, and improved leadership and teamwork skills. The program achieved its primary objectives, including developing students' skills, empowering them to execute a philanthropic process, and collecting data on youth-led philanthropy. Future steps include revising the curriculum, facilitating another cohort, and supporting other organizations in piloting youth-led philanthropy.
