Tobacco control mass media campaigns are a key element of comprehensive tobacco control strategies, and research has shown they can be effective in changing adult smoking behaviors. A Cochrane review found that six out of nine studies demonstrated positive effects on smoking behavior, with factors such as intensity and duration influencing effectiveness. Recent evaluations of campaigns like "Stoptober" and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Tips" campaign have estimated significant numbers of quit attempts and life years saved. In Ontario, 94% of smokers were exposed to tobacco control mass media, and exposure to these campaigns increased the likelihood of making a quit attempt. The study analyzed data from 3361 adult smokers and found that recall of individual mass media campaigns was associated with increased rates of quit attempts and reduced risk of relapse. The results highlight the importance of continued programming of effective mass media campaigns to encourage quitting among Ontario smokers.
