Summary

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) affects 50-80% of pregnant women, with hyperemesis gravidarum being the extreme end of the spectrum. Despite available medications, treatment is often delayed due to concerns about harming the fetus. Ginger has been found to provide significant relief in vomiting, and complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are gaining popularity. A cohort study was conducted to determine the association of vanilla ice cream in symptomatic relief of NVP, as measured by the modified Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis (PUQE) score. The study found that patients who consumed vanilla ice cream had better recovery and lower modified PUQE scores at 48 hours, suggesting that vanilla ice cream can be used as an adjuvant therapy for treating hyperemesis gravidarum.
