Summary

A national study of intimate partner homicide found that 67-80% of murders involve prior physical abuse. The Danger Assessment (DA) instrument, a 15-item yes/no survey, was developed to help identify women at risk. The study tested the DA's ability to predict intimate partner homicide among women in violent relationships. Results showed that 15 of 17 DA items distinguished homicide victims from abused women, with the strongest risk factors being use or threatened use of a weapon, threats of being killed, perpetrator drug abuse, and prior gun ownership. Women who had been threatened with being killed were almost 15 times more likely to be homicide victims, and those with perpetrators who used or threatened to use a weapon were 20 times more likely to be killed.
