Summary

The 21st International North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop discussed uncertainties in pipeline water percentage measurement. The reliability of water measurement in oil through sampling systems is questioned, particularly with increased ranges of density and types of crude oils. Composite samplers are the standard for determining water content, but they have limitations, such as only providing results at the end of a batch and exposing personnel to hazardous liquids. Online real-time analysis of water content can provide beneficial operational advantages, but the validity of composite samplers needs to be compared to real-time analyzers. The petroleum industry lacks statements of uncertainty, making it difficult to assure good measurements. A new analysis routine can compare online measurements to determine uncertainty.
