Summary

Forced marriage is a global problem threatening women and girls' freedom, safety, health, and education, with over 60 million women aged 20-24 in developing countries married as girls. In the US, there are estimated to be as many as 3,000 known and suspected cases of forced marriage, with victims from 56 different countries and various faiths. A forced marriage is one that takes place without full and free consent, often due to factors like age, incapacity, or force, fraud, or coercion. The Tahirih Justice Center's national survey found that community-based service providers are struggling to recognize and handle forced marriage cases, with less than 10% having a working definition of forced marriage and less than a quarter having screening and referral protocols in place. The survey also identified a significant population of "hidden victims" beyond the estimated 3,000 cases, with two out of three respondents feeling that there were cases not being identified in the populations they work with.
