In 2002, northern Sweden experienced an extremely early spring and summer, with warm weather from May to June and a warm and sunny August, resulting in one of the warmest summers on record. This led to an early flight period for most Lepidoptera species, which flew before most lepidopterologists arrived, resulting in few remarkable finds despite favorable weather. Notable species found included Hepialus fuscoargenteus, Pyrgus andromedae, and Euphydryas iduna, as well as Coleophora paeltsaella and Eupithecia fennoscandica in the Pältsa region. Some species, such as Cosmorhoe ocellata and Eupithecia linariata, expanded their range northward along the coastal regions. In the southern part of the mountain range, many species were still recovering from previous bad seasons, but some, like Albulina orbitulus, had a good year due to the generous sunshine.
