Denise Abbey started her career with the War Information Program in 1944, working with the Office of War Information (OWI) in New York City. She was assigned to the reception and assignment section, where she worked with new employees from various divisions. Abbey was later sent overseas, arriving in Oran and then Algiers, where she worked with the local information group. She was then assigned to Naples, Italy, where she worked with the Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) and OWI, handling intelligence and psyops, including internal reports and recording the reactions of the Italian people to the armies of occupation. After Rome fell, Abbey was assigned to move to Rome, where she continued to work with PWB and OWI, producing reports and handling information. She later moved to Austria, where she worked with Radio Austria and the Austro-American Institute of Education, and eventually returned to Washington, D.C., where she worked on various programs, including the American Specialists Program and the Foreign Nationals Orientation Program.
