Summary

A study was conducted at 10 urban dairy units to assess milk composition and quality from production to consumption. The majority of units used bucket milking machines (40%), followed by rotary parlor (30%), herring-bone parlor (20%), and a combination of bucket milking machines and parlor (10%). Feed costs accounted for 87.82% of variable costs, followed by labor (5.47%), medicines (3.21%), operational costs (1.9%), and insurance costs (1.6%). Fully automated dairy units had higher mean herd size, fixed costs, and variable costs compared to semi-automated units. Milk produced in fully automated farms had better keeping quality, higher average fat values, and lower somatic cell counts. Fully automated units also had lower coliform counts and higher mean average milk yield per animal per day.
