Eine Studie mit 526 Patienten mit Hirnmetastasen ergab, dass der extrakranielle Score (EC-Score) eine gute Vorhersagekraft für Patienten mit sehr schlechter Prognose hat. Der EC-Score basiert auf extrakraniellen Faktoren wie Albumin, LDH und Anzahl der metastatisch betroffenen Organsysteme. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der EC-Score eine bessere Korrelation für Patienten mit der schlechtesten Prognose hat als die etablierten RPA- und GPA-Scores. Patienten mit einem EC-Score von 3 hatten ein medianes Gesamtüberleben von nur 0,6 Monaten. Die Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass der EC-Score eine einfache und zuverlässige Methode zur Identifizierung von Patienten mit sehr schlechter Prognose ist, die möglicherweise nicht von einer palliativen Ganzhirnbestrahlung profitieren.
