Summary

Afterschool programs that follow evidence-based practices are effective in promoting social and emotional development in young people. Research found that programs using four specific practices (SAFE: sequenced step-by-step training, active learning, focused skill development, and explicit skill definition) had significant improvements in self-perceptions, school bonding, positive social behaviors, and achievement test scores, as well as reductions in conduct problems and drug use. In contrast, programs not using these practices showed no significant improvements. The improvement index showed that participating in a SAFE program could result in gains of 8-12 percentiles in various outcomes, such as standardized test scores and positive social behaviors.
