Summary

The Kenai Peninsula Borough protects salmon spawning and rearing habitat within anadromous waters, which are waters with fish that spend part of their life cycle in the sea and return to freshwater to spawn. The Borough has a 50-foot habitat protection district along these waters, with some exceptions, to protect riparian vegetation that provides food and cover for fish and wildlife, reduces erosion, and moderates storm water runoff. Projects within 50 feet of anadromous waters require a permit, and some activities, such as clearing native vegetation and excavation, are prohibited. The River Center, a multi-agency permitting and information center, can provide guidance and answer questions about the regulations and permitting process.
