Summary

Researchers analyzed data corruption in a storage stack consisting of 1.53 million disk drives over 41 months, finding over 400,000 instances of checksum mismatches, with nearline disks developing mismatches an order of magnitude more often than enterprise-class disks. Checksum mismatches showed high spatial and temporal locality, and were not independent events within or across disks. The study classified data corruption into three categories: checksum mismatches, identity discrepancies, and parity inconsistencies, with checksum mismatches being the most common. The findings highlight the need for corruption-proof system design and provide insights for storage system developers.
