Summary

An analysis of Ohio's latest test results shows large disparities between economically disadvantaged students and their more stable peers, with test performance negatively correlated with the percentage of disadvantaged students. The analysis found that districts with the best test performance have the lowest percentage of disadvantaged students, while those with the lowest performance have the highest percentage. For example, in the highest-performing districts, 86.2% of students were proficient or above in math, with 17.4% economically disadvantaged, while in the lowest-performing districts, only 44.3% were proficient or above, with 77% economically disadvantaged. The analysis highlights a significant achievement gap between poor and wealthy students, with fewer than 2% of students in the lowest-performing quintile scoring advanced in three of four subject areas. Statewide education management organizations are committed to addressing these disparities and plan to push for more focus on the educational needs of disadvantaged students.
