The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) was established by the Convention du Mètre in 1875 to ensure worldwide unification of physical measurements. The BIPM operates under the supervision of the Comité International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM) and is responsible for establishing fundamental standards, carrying out comparisons of national and international standards, and coordinating measuring techniques. The BIPM has extended its activities to include standards of measurement for electricity, photometry, radiometry, ionizing radiation, and time scales. The organization has nine consultative committees that provide information and propose recommendations to the CIPM concerning units. The BIPM publishes annual reports and proceedings of the Conférence Générale, Comité International, and Comités Consultatifs. As of 1997, 48 states were members of the Convention du Mètre.
