Summary

The Sea Surface Microlayer (SML) in the Mediterranean Sea was found to be enriched with trace metals, including Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mo, V, Zn, and Pb, relative to the underlying water. The residence times of these metals in the SML varied from minutes to hours, with Fe having the shortest residence time of 3.6 ± 6.0 min and Cu having a residence time of 5.8 ± 6.2 h. The concentrations of dissolved metals in the SML and subsurface waters were positively correlated with salinity, while the total fraction of some reactive metals in the SML showed a negative correlation with salinity and a positive correlation with microbial abundance. A strong negative correlation was found between the dissolved and total Ni concentration and heterotrophic bacterial abundance in the SML and subsurface waters.
