Summary

The intensification of industrial and agricultural activities has led to environmental deterioration, with heavy metal accumulation in soil being a major concern. Heavy metals like mercury (Hg) and zinc (Zn) are toxic and can cause damage to human health and ecosystems. Phytoremediation, a cost-effective technique, uses plants to extract and adsorb heavy metals from soil. Sphagneticola trilobata was evaluated for its potential to adsorb Hg and Zn in agricultural soils. The results showed that the plant adsorbed Hg between 43.49 and 59.22% and Zn between 32.68 and 64.37% after 60 days. The bioconcentration and translocation factors indicated that Sphagneticola trilobata has phytostabilizing capacity similar to other plant species like Eichhornia crassipes and Sorghum bicolor.
