Summary

Researchers investigated the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to diagnose Alzheimer's disease (AD) from brain images of subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A systematic analysis of 134 articles from 2010 to 2020 found that ANNs were used to diagnose AD based on MRI, PET, and CT images, with MRI being the most commonly used. The study highlights the potential of ANNs in early AD diagnosis and recommends using the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database for future research. Most studies focused on classifying subjects into AD patients and healthy individuals, with only 16% considering different stages of cognitive impairment. The main purpose of the studies was AD classification and diagnosis, with further research needed to classify and diagnose AD in subjects with MCI.
