Summary

A large amount of information on emissions from vegetation fires has been accumulated, but it is scattered and not readily accessible. This paper provides a critical evaluation of available data, integrated into a consistent format, and presents emission factors for key species emitted from biomass fires. Global estimates of pyrogenic emissions are derived and compared to inverse modelling studies, showing significant impacts on air quality, human health, climate, and the water cycle. Biomass burning has been a constant companion to humanity for two million years, and its impact on human health and the atmosphere is significant. Satellite and airborne observations have shown elevated levels of pollutants over vast areas, and smoke aerosols perturb regional and global radiation budgets. Accurate data on emissions from biomass fires are required to assess their atmospheric impact, and this paper provides a synthesis of available data on fire emission characteristics for important chemical species. Emission factors are defined and used to calculate global estimates of emissions from biomass burning, taking into account the composition of the fuel and combustion conditions.
