The Australian Government and the Japanese Government agreed to protect migratory birds and birds in danger of extinction and their environments through an agreement signed on February 6, 1974, which came into force on April 30, 1981. The agreement prohibits the taking of migratory birds and their eggs, except for specific purposes, and regulates the sale and hunting of these birds. It also requires special protective measures for species in danger of extinction, exchange of data and research, and establishment of sanctuaries and conservation efforts. The agreement remains in force for 15 years and can be terminated with one year's notice. An annex to the agreement lists species of migratory birds, including shearwaters, storm-petrels, and egrets.
