Summary

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is affected by a polymicrobial disease involving ostreid herpesvirus-1 (OsHV-1) and Vibrio spp. An experimental method was used where specific pathogen-free oysters were placed in cohabitation with diseased oysters. The study found that OsHV-1 and Vibrio spp. in seawater peaked within 48 hours and decreased thereafter. A cohabitation time of 1.5 hours was sufficient to transmit pathogens and induce mortality. Mortality increased with cohabitation time, reaching a plateau at 20%. The optimal cohabitation time was 5-6 days, with mortality occurring 1-2 days earlier.
