Summary

Mixed connective tissue and epithelial tumors of the breast, including fibroadenoma (FA) and phyllodes tumor (PT), can be difficult to distinguish due to similarities in clinical and histological images. Researchers used multiphoton microscopy to image collagen and autofluorescent substances in mammary gland tumors without staining! They built quantitative evaluation metrics to discriminate between FA and PT using region segmentation by deep learning. Results showed that PT had a higher epithelial-to-stromal area ratio and lower SHG signal intensity in the stromal area compared to FA. A scatter plot combining these scores clearly separated FA and PT, demonstrating the potential of multiphoton microscopy for diagnostic imaging of breast tumors.
