Summary

California Department of Industrial Relations' Division of Occupational Safety & Health provides guidelines for respiratory protection in the workplace. Improper use of respirators can result in worker injury and illness, and Cal/OSHA enforcement. The regulation for worker use of respirators is in title 8 of the California Code of Regulations, section 5144. Respirators should be used when necessary to protect employee health, during installation of controls, where controls fail, and in emergencies. A comprehensive respirator program includes written procedures, medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and program evaluation.
