Summary

Measurements of ionic conductance in divalent cation-doped single crystals of NaCl were used to investigate impurity-cation vacancy association. The measurements were made over 150°-650°C on crystals doped with Mg, Mn, Ca, Sr, Pb, and Ba impurity ions, revealing four regions of ionic conductance. The conductivity results were analyzed using the Lidiard association theory, yielding enthalpies of association for each impurity-cation vacancy complex. The enthalpies increased with impurity ion size for larger ions, but remained relatively constant for smaller ions. A detailed study of the NaCl-MnCl2 system using ionic conductance, impurity diffusion, and electron spin resonance measurements confirmed the enthalpy of association and suggested that next-nearest-neighbour interactions may be significant for small impurity ions. The entropy of formation of complexes was also examined, and the conductance measurements were used to study the solubility of impurities in the NaCl lattice, revealing that impurity ion size is a more important factor than polarisability in determining solubility.
