Summary

Commas are used to separate independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions, between items in a list, after introductory clauses or phrases, and to indicate extra information or a side comment. They are also used between co-ordinate adjectives, to indicate a pause or shift in focus, before tag questions, with participle phrases, place names, dates, and to prevent confusion or misreading. Examples include: The light was on, but no one was home, I enjoy skiing, skating, or indoor swimming, and He was a difficult, stubborn child.
