Researchers compared arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) relationships between a 15.1% hypoxia inhalation test at sea level and a hypobaric chamber exposure equivalent to 8,000 feet of altitude in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and healthy subjects. The study found that PaO2 relationships did not differ between the two types of hypoxic exposures, and that a single relationship existed for both normal subjects and patients with COPD. The results also showed that regression models can predict PaO2 during hypoxia exposure with increased accuracy when spirometric variables are included.
