Summary

Researchers investigated how local and global features contribute to music familiarity judgments, asking musically untrained participants to differentiate famous from unknown musical excerpts presented in normal or scrambled ways. The results showed that the minimum duration for differentiation is extremely short, highlighting the contribution of very local features to music memory. The study suggests that local features, such as small melodic patterns, play a crucial role in music recognition, even when the music is scrambled. This finding is consistent with feature theory models, which propose that object recognition rests on the processing of local features. The study's results have implications for our understanding of music perception and memory, and suggest that local features are an important component of music recognition.
