Summary

Herbert W. Armstrong founded the Worldwide Church of God, claiming to be the only one who could correctly interpret scripture. He began studying the Bible in 1927 and was ordained a minister in 1933, but his ordination was later revoked due to his deviating teachings. He founded the Worldwide Church of God, which never grew larger than 100,000 members, but its radio and TV programs reached millions. The church emphasized works and tithing for salvation, and Armstrong's message was a mix of Seventh Day Adventism, Jewish observances, and cultist doctrines. After Armstrong's death in 1986, Joseph Tkach took over and changed the church's doctrines to a more orthodox position, despite opposition from members. The church eventually became a Bible-believing church, but still maintains an authoritarian leadership structure and lacks fiscal responsibility. Armstrong's teachings included British Israelism, which claims the Anglo-Saxons are the ten lost tribes of Israel, and denied the Trinity, believing that every man can become God. He also taught that Jesus Christ is subordinate to God the Father and that the Holy Spirit is not a personality, but rather the mind and power of God.
