Summary

Researchers studied the spatial association patterns of two macroalgae, Macrocystis pyrifera and Ulva lactuca, in a rocky intertidal zone in southern Chile. They found positive associations between the two species at high-tidal areas, but neutral patterns at low-tidal heights. The presence of M. pyrifera reduced evaporation, temperature, and photosynthetic active radiation, improving the physiological performance of U. lactuca. The results suggest that M. pyrifera acts as a 'nurse species' for U. lactuca, extending its vertical distribution to high intertidal zones.
