Summary

The Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) is a next-generation, adaptive optics assisted, near-IR imager and integral field spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Unit Telescope 4. The instrument control software (INS) is responsible for controlling all instrument functions and implementing observation, calibration, and maintenance procedures. ERIS has a complex architecture with two science channels, NIX and SPIFFIER, and offers various observation modes, including standard imaging, Sparse Aperture Masking, Apodizing Phase Plate, Focal Plane Coronagraphy, and Long Slit Spectroscopy. The INS controls the Adaptive Optics module, which includes two wavefront sensors, and implements templates for operations. The software development process includes software quality assurance activities, and the INS is designed to handle wavefront sensors function control, AO secondary loops, IFS quick-look processing, and on-line processing for high-contrast imaging observations.
