Summary

Intel has implemented a microcode patch capability in its P6 processors, including Pentium Pro and Pentium II, allowing bugs to be fixed after the processor is fabricated. The patch capability is used to alter the microcode, which is stored in an internal ROM, and is downloadable from the BIOS. The patches are stored in a small SRAM and are triggered by a special CPU register. The microcode patch capability can fix certain bugs, but not all, and is limited by the number of match registers and the size of the patch RAM. Intel has already used this feature to fix several minor bugs and plans to include it in all future processors. The company has also implemented security features to prevent tampering with the microcode patches.
