Summary

A method called multi-pole system analysis (MPSA) is presented for determining optimal system designs considering sustainability requirements such as energetic efficiency, economic profitability, and environmental quality. The method consists of four steps: system synthesis, system analysis under uncertainty, stochastic system optimization, and sensitivity analysis. It is applied to an innovative wind-energy converter, the energy ship concept, which involves a wind-powered vessel with a hydrokinetic turbine. The method incorporates uncertainty aspects and performs stochastic optimization to overcome the disadvantage of missing robustness in previous deterministic optimal systems.
