Summary

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are serious health problems affecting millions of people each year, with Escherichia coli causing 75-90% of uncomplicated UTIs. A study was conducted among 190 female students residing in Nicon Hostel, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Nigeria, to determine the prevalence of UTIs, isolate and identify the most prevalent bacteria, and identify drug sensitivity patterns. The results showed that 57 (30%) isolates were positive for bacteria, with Escherichia coli (35.09%), Staphylococcus sp. (22.81%), and Candida sp. (21.05%) being the most common. The bacterial isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin (100%), Pefloxacin (89.47%), and Sparfloxacin (71.93%), but showed resistance to other antibiotics. The study concluded that the prevalence of UTI is high among the student residents of Nicon Hostel, Federal Polytechnic Bida.
