Summary

This study examines the role of structural and agentic resources in shaping school-to-work transitions in England, using data from the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England. The findings identify six distinct pathways, including an academic track, vocational training, and further education, as well as a group of young people who are not in education or training (NEET). The results suggest that young people's agency, including their intentions, self-directedness, and self-efficacy, plays a significant role in shaping their transition pathways, alongside structural factors such as socioeconomic resources and area characteristics. The study highlights the importance of considering both structural constraints and individual agency in understanding variations in youth transitions, and notes that empirical studies testing the complex interplay between individual and structural forces are scarce.
