Summary

HIV and AIDS in museums and archives. Historians and curators find that museum collections inadequately represent the impact of AIDS across diverse groups and the range of local, national, international responses. Archives have saved only a narrow range of documentation, with collections primarily consisting of art, activist ephemera, and public health media, which reflect a limited array of activities and exclude certain groups, such as black artists. This has led to inaccurate perceptions of the past, which in turn feed into the trajectory of disease in the present, contributing to stigmatising representations and the criminalisation of HIV transmission.
