The COVID-19 crisis has significantly impacted the lives of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) in Ireland, disrupting healthcare services, social interactions, and sexual relationships. A survey of 942 gbMSM found that 72% reduced their partner numbers during the crisis, and many took COVID-specific prevention measures during sex. However, sexual health service access was highly disrupted, with STI testing, HIV testing, PrEP, and sexual health vaccinations being the most affected services. The survey also found that 17% of participants were concerned about their alcohol or drug use, and 27% screened positive for alcohol use disorder. The majority of gbMSM reported that their mental health was worse during the crisis, and only 23% accessed mental health services. Employment and education were also impacted, with 34% of participants experiencing reduced income or receipt of Pandemic Unemployment Payment, and 24% experiencing changes to their education plans. The study highlights the need for expanded sexual health services and additional support for gbMSM during the COVID-19 crisis.
