Summary

The Rural Entrepreneurship Teaching Unit (RETU) is a program designed to introduce university retailing and hospitality majors to rural entrepreneurship opportunities. It consists of three modules and integrates knowledge on rural development, market analysis, entrepreneurship, and marketing in an interactive outreach project. The program pairs student teams with rural community entrepreneurs and business leaders to apply business and community resiliency concepts to local business sector issues. The RETU was piloted at two Midwestern universities and showed positive results, with learners increasing their understanding of issues facing rural entrepreneurs and appreciating the positive and negative aspects of owning a small business in a rural community. Community participants also expressed satisfaction with the newfound knowledge and ideas generated from the project. The program aims to expand learners' awareness of career and lifestyle options in rural communities and build appreciation for challenges and opportunities in rural entrepreneurship.
