Summary

The research on second language (L2) speaking assessment has focused on formal proficiency tests, but with a growing interest in learning-oriented assessment (LOA), more researchers are exploring learner involvement in speaking assessment, including self- and peer-assessment. This involves learners evaluating their own and their peers' performances, which can be an effective way to promote learning. The study aims to address two questions: (1) can learners accurately assess their own and their peers' oral performances, and (2) what factors in self- and peer-assessment affect the enhancement of L2 speaking ability. The research is guided by the framework of LOA, which considers multiple dimensions of L2 learning, including proficiency, elicitation, instructional, sociocognitive, affective, contextual, and interactional dimensions. Empirical studies have shown that learners can assess speaking proficiency, but their ratings may not always match those of teachers, and that effective feedback should prioritize the learner's perception and needs.
