Summary

Researchers studied the self-assembly of cylinders on a soft solid, an elastic analog of the "Cheerios Effect", which describes capillary interactions on a fluid interface. Experiments, scaling estimates, and numerical simulations showed that the effective two-body interaction between cylinders can be described by an exponential attraction potential, resulting in exponential behavior with respect to separation distance. When multiple cylinders are placed on the gel, they cluster together if not too far apart, otherwise their motion becomes elastically arrested. The study used a physically cross-linked gel as the soft substrate and highly polished aluminum rods as the cylinders, finding that the shear modulus of the gel was 18 Pa. The results have implications for understanding the behavior of particles on soft solids and the potential for self-assembly in such systems.
