Summary

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have high specific mechanical properties, making them suitable for marine and offshore applications. However, their long-term performance is dependent on interlaminar properties and matrix degradation due to moisture intake. This study investigates the effects of moisture absorption and fiber surface treatment on CFRP interfacial properties. A silane coupling agent combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was used to modify carbon fiber surfaces. The results show that interlaminar shear strength, mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness, and glass transition temperature decrease after hygrothermal aging. Silane treatment improves interlaminar fracture toughness, and incorporating MWCNTs further enhances these properties, with average values 33%, 40.5%, and 4.3% higher than untreated samples after hygrothermal aging.
