Summary

Mineral dust plays a crucial role in the Martian weather and climate system, and understanding its characteristics and transport is essential for planning future activities on Mars. The Mars General Circulation Model (MGCM) will be used with data assimilation techniques to integrate observations from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) and other instruments. Current data assimilation schemes have limitations, such as using 2D models and assuming well-mixed dust, which do not accurately represent the vertical distribution of dust. Proposed work aims to develop a more realistic 3D dust assimilation scheme that fully couples winds and dust distribution, allowing for the exploitation of vertical profiles and the prediction of dust lifting through surface wind stress and dust devil activity.
