Summary

This project investigated the transition of students from Level 1 to Level 2 programming, focusing on the use of a visual-based programming language at Level 1 and its preparation of students for text-based programming at Level 2. A survey of 810 students and analysis of assessment data from six student cohorts were conducted. The results showed that most students felt prepared for higher-level studies, except for syntax aspects of text-based programming. However, assessment data indicated that poor performance in visual programming at Level 1 did not necessarily predict poor performance in text-based programming at Level 2. The project also investigated the efficacy of a bridging course, finding that students who would have benefited from it did not attend, and those who did attend did not show immediate benefits in their performance.
