The E-Pedagogy of Handheld Devices 2013 Survey investigated how UK distance learning students use handheld devices for study. The survey, conducted at the Open University, examined patterns of ownership, adoption, and use of e-readers, tablets, and smartphones among undergraduate students. The research aimed to document and analyze changing study practices, highlighting issues and opportunities for Higher Education in supporting student adoption of technology and development of effective study methods. Key findings included increasing adoption of handheld devices for reading, with 50% of students using e-books for academic work, and a shift towards more positive perceptions of e-readers and tablets. However, concerns remained regarding the limitations of e-books, such as difficulty highlighting text and navigating pages. The study also found that students who purchased handheld devices primarily for study tended to use them more in their learning than those who purchased them for other purposes.
