Summary

The effect of the March 20, 2015 solar eclipse on the ionosphere was studied using vertical ionospheric soundings from Rome, Gibilmanna, and San Vito dei Normanni. The response of critical frequencies foF1 and foF2 was investigated, and a Solar Obscuration Factor (SOF) was used to model the decreased solar irradiance. The study also examined the occurrence of the Sporadic E layer during the eclipse and tested a regional adaptive 3D ionospheric model, introducing corrections to improve its performance.
