Summary

The Apollo Operations Handbook describes the Electrical Power System (EPS) of the Command and Service Module (CSM). The EPS consists of energy storage, power generation, power conversion, and power distribution. Energy storage includes cryogenic gas storage, entry and postlanding batteries, and pyrotechnic batteries. Power generation is provided by three fuel cell power plants, which supply primary d-c power to the spacecraft systems. Power conversion is achieved through solid state static inverters, which convert d-c power into 115/200-volt 400-cps 3-phase a-c power. The power distribution system includes d-c and a-c power buses, sensing circuits, controls, and displays. The system operates in three modes: peak, average, and minimum mission loads.
