The Avontuur Soil Erosion Control Workshop was held on May 11, 2013, with 48 participants from the district and various conservation organizations. The objectives of the workshop were to launch the GEF SGP project, share knowledge on sustainable land use, and provide participants with the opportunity to apply for land and water conservation. The program included introductions, energizers, input on soil and water conservation, practical exercises, and planning for follow-up actions. Noel Oettle explained the importance of maintaining a balance between weathering and erosion, and the role of earthworms and vegetation in forming and maintaining healthy soil. He also discussed the causes of erosion on the Avontuur property, including overgrazing, ploughing of steep land, and poor road construction. The approach to controlling soil erosion on Avontuur involves analyzing the problem, assessing management practices, planning actions, and implementing and monitoring interventions. The key principles of this approach include keeping rainwater in the landscape, weakening the impact of raindrops and runoff water, establishing or maintaining vegetation, and creating favorable conditions for earthworms and soil organisms.
