Summary

Non-Fourier heat conduction theories have been introduced to thermal stress analysis to account for wave-like behavior under extreme thermal environments. Combined non-Fourier, nonlocal thermoelastic theories reveal new phenomena in thermal stress analysis of cracked structures. This presentation summarizes recent progress in thermal fracture analysis using nonlocal, non-Fourier thermoelastic theories, discussing rationality of application and solving two typical thermal fracture problems from additive manufacturing. Non-Fourier heat conduction leads to thermal and mechanical overshooting, while nonlocal, non-Fourier heat conduction theory can limit thermal stress around crack tips, allowing stress-based fracture criterion to be used in thermal fracture design.
