Two coyote siblings, a brother and sister, hunt for food on a grassy slope in late morning. The sister is timid, while the brother is wary but not timid. They sense a change in the air, and their attention is drawn to different scents and sounds. The brother catches a mouse, and the sister chases away vultures from a jackrabbit carcass, which they share for their meal. As they rest, they watch the sky and sense the approaching fall season. As the sun sets, they howl, and their howls are different from their usual ones, filled with barking and low yips. They run nervously, sensing something new and awe-filled. A storm approaches, bringing lightning, thunder, and heavy rain. The next morning, they find a dead pine tree with smoke rising from it, which eventually turns to flames, starting a fire that burns for a week and smolders for a month. The coyotes spend the fall finding new food sources in and out of the burn area. In late November, they part ways and find mates. Three years later, the brother and sister reunite on a grassy slope, touching noses and watching the sun rise together.
